Introduction

The history of music goes back for many centuries. While we don’t know as much about music from thousands of years ago, we do know quite a bit about music styles and composers from several hundred years ago - and of course the music and composers from more recent times.

The music of today is much different from music from the past. We are going to look at three particular styles of historical music.

The first style we will look at is “Baroque” music. The era of this music style was primarily from 1600 to 1750. (There is a particular reason why the Baroque era is said to have ended in 1750. Find out why and win extra pride points!)

The next style is from the “Classical” era. That began around 1750 at the end of the Baroque era and lasted until the mid 1800's.

The third style we will look at is the “Romantic” era music. That began around the late part of the Classical era in the mid 1800's and lasted until the early 1900's.

Before we begin, be thinking about the following questions:

Do you have a favorite style of today's music?

Do you know about other styles of today's music?

Do you believe you might like a musical style from a long time ago?
